17 Dec 2004

Today they finally started to put pipe in the ground. Here are a couple of shots of the first two pipe sections. The second is just being positioned. Pipe was put in back to the dam, which will be cut through on Monday. That will be interesting. Once I learned that was there I asked that it be cut and not hammered apart since I did not want the vibration from a lot of heavy duty concrete hammering going into the house.

This next shot is interesting because it shows the little laser gadget they use to align the pipe sections. It's on the yellow box in front of the pipe.

The first of three 22 degree bends going in

The rest of the pipe is going to be put in deep enough that they will use this large box to keep the trench from collapsing on the workers. It's bigger than it looks.

Being dropped into place. It's interesting to watch dirt be moved around for this. Because it's such a tight location to work in everything gets moved at least three times before the pipe sections are buried.

It's also interesting to see the hierarchy there is among the crew here. The guy in the white hard hat in the first couple of photos is the supervisor, and he is not here all the time. I talked to him the most before giving them the job. The guy running the excavator in the last couple of shots is next, and he is "senior officer on the scene". The guy in the red sweatshirt and hard hat is also here all the time and he is #3. Then there are 4 or 5 laborers. Also interesting to note that all the laborers are Spanish speaking, and that would not have been true in Richmond even a couple of years ago.
